About

Avery O'Brien is a visual artist based in Tucson, AZ. After growing up in the Sonoran Desert, she moved to the Midwest to attend Knox College. There, she earned B.A. degrees in both Studio Art and Creative Writing. She spent the first three years of her college education studying two-dimensional forms, such as oil painting and film photography, before discovering a love for the three-dimensional. This background informs much of her current studio practice. Recently, she moved back to her hometown, where she continues to build her sculpture portfolio.
O'Brien's sculptures are largely rooted in observation, of both our natural and domestic worlds. In her studio practice, she gives equal weight to process and product. She seeks out the tactile and the handmade, in a culture that increasingly pushes towards the opposite. Her work undeniably exhibits her beliefs in the significance of play and intentionally slowing ourselves down.
